I really enjoyed this costume, although I gave Zandra a horrible headache by first messing up the reference pictures and then constantly going, "hey, we should do this!" The final product looks amazing, though, and since it's not made out of vinyl (like most of the other Organization XIII coats I've seen) it's actually really comfortable to wear! As long as I don't go outside, I mean. The sun is not your friend when you're wearing head-to-toe black, boots, gloves and a wig. The most complicated part of getting into costume was actually doing the makeup, although I made the happy discovery that lipliner works perfectly well as a substitute for face paint. That's pretty much all I used - eyeliner pen and lipliner (also used to make my brows match the wig a bit closer). The chakrams were a last-minute addition, and while they came out fairly well for something I decided to do 36 hours before the con, I'm going to redo them so that they look a little better and will (hopefully!) be more sturdy. The pair I took to Akon 18 was made out of carved styrofoam, balsa wood, and paper mache. The paper mache dried slower than I was expecting, so I had to finish painting them the night before the con. We'll see if Home Depot's foam is made of sterner stuff.
I also want to redo the beads, since the spray paint I used on them liked to migrate (I'm going to reiterate that Michael's spray paint is awful). Plus, it's an excuse to learn cold-casting! The wig was interesting, since I had never really worn (let alone styled) a wig. I had to choose between orange-red and auburn when I was ordering, so I did have to darken it up a little. For the record, the stuff in sharpies does not seem to be all that water-soluble. Most of the color was floating in a film on top of the water, but once that was gone there was enough pigment left to color the wig the shade or two it needed. I'm pretty happy with the color, but I need to restyle it. And by 'restyle' I mean 'attack with several cans of hairspray.'
The fans kind of scared Zandra (she's sworn off KH cosplay), but the recognition was a lot of fun, and I got to wave chakrams at people!
